Big Teddy bears are often given to children as toys and are also called plush toys. Teddy Bears were first introduced in 1902 at the London Toy Fair by Morris Michtom - the U.S toy maker who had just started his business with his wife Rose after emigrating from Russia. They had seen a cartoon of President Roosevelt refusing to shoot a tied up black bear while hunting in Mississippi earlier that year and wanted to make an association of the cuddly toy with Teddy. Loosely based on the real hunting encounter involving President Roosevelt in 1902, this was how teddy bears got their name. The first Life Size Teddy Bear was made by Margarete Steiff, a German inventor of the early 1900s.
